Thanksgiving Free Post

   My week off was a much needed break from the busyness of school. I finally got to sleep in and relax! The beginning of my week was pretty calm. My family mostly just hung out around the house. On Tuesday I volunteered at the Sheppard's food market and helped hand out food to those in need. It was a really positive way to spend my time and give back to the community. On Tuesday night, my family headed down to New Orleans to celebrate Thanksgiving with my dad's family. We had dinner with my grandparents and my dad's aunts and uncles that live in different states. Some of my aunts and uncles I hadn't seen in a few years. After breakfast on Wednesday morning, we drove back to Baton Rouge.    In my family we eat Thanksgiving lunch instead of Thanksgiving dinner. "Check. Mate?" Review

   Out of all of the narratives we have been reading in class, Check. Mate? by Miles Pequeno, seems the most prompting. Personally, when a teacher assigns an essay I can never come up with a topic. I feel like picking your topic is the most frustrating part of the whole process, especially when the topic is very vague. Most students try to choose a topic that is life changing or significant to their life in some way. This is not always the way to go. Check. Mate?  uses a mild topic as an symbol to a bigger event. This is a brilliant way to intrigue readers without overpowering them.     Check. Mate? focuses mainly on the game chess. The author uses chess to describe his relationship with his father, and how he grows up because of it. The author uses many different strategies to entertain the reader while still keeping with the theme. He uses vivid detail when describing scenery or characters. This gives the reader a sense of what the narrator's life was li...

Flash Fiction

   Lilly was nervous for her first day of sixth grade. She had to leave all of her friends behind in Denver, and was worried about making new ones in Los Angeles. Hopefully everyone was nice to her.    Jim was so excited for his first day of sixth grade. He was in middle school now. His brother told Jim all about his awesome middle school experiences. Jim rushed outside just in time to catch the bus.    Lilly walked into her homeroom teacher's classroom five minutes early. She figured it would be good to introduce herself. Mrs. Cunningham was hidden behind at least 40 textbooks. They were labeled "Life Science." Lilly sighed, she hated life science.    Jim waltzed into Mrs. Cunningham's class a minute after the bell rang. His brother had the same sixth grade teacher. He knew she wasn't strict.
