Thanksgiving Break - Katie Free Post - Landry

Draft Thesis + Evidence

Thesis- " In "Lord of the Flies,” Golding displays Ralph and Jack’s opposite personalities and occupations on the island to suggest that their unique friendship and leadership roles affect one another." The quotation "They walked along, two continents of experience and feeling, unable to communicate. If I could only get a pig! I'll come back and go on with the shelter. They looked at each other, baffled, in love and hate." (55) displays Ralph and Jack's relationship perfectly. This is the root of all of their problems while on the island. The boys want to be friends, but hate each other because they both have commanding characters, that cause conflict between them. This quotation supports my thesis because Ralph and Jack disagree on most important business on the island, and cannot agree on what is top priority. Ralph believes the focus should be on the fire, while Jack believes it should be on hunting. I think this quote is important because

Thanksgiving Free Post

My week off was a much needed break from the busyness of school. I finally got to sleep in and relax! The beginning of my week was pretty calm. My family mostly just hung out around the house. On Tuesday I volunteered at the Sheppard's food market and helped hand out food to those in need. It was a really positive way to spend my time and give back to the community. On Tuesday night, my family headed down to New Orleans to celebrate Thanksgiving with my dad's family. We had dinner with my grandparents and my dad's aunts and uncles that live in different states. Some of my aunts and uncles I hadn't seen in a few years. After breakfast on Wednesday morning, we drove back to Baton Rouge.    In my family we eat Thanksgiving lunch instead of Thanksgiving dinner. I love it because we get to eat the leftovers for dinner. My granny makes the best sweet potato casserole ever. It is my favorite food that she makes, and she makes the best foods. Another tradition we have in my

LOTF Response

The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away.  Once there was this and that; and now--and the ship had gone. [... Jack refusing to give Piggy the floor when he has the conch...] "The rules!" shouted Ralph.  "You're breaking the rules!" "Who cares?" Ralph summoned his wits. "Because the rules are the only thing we've got!" But Jack was shouting against him. "Bollocks to the rules!  We're strong--we hunt!  If there's a beast, we'll hunt it down!  We'll close in and beat and beat and beat--!" (91)    This particular passage is from chapter five. In this chapter Ralph calls an assembly to discuss the problems  within the group of boys. Ralph addresses many issue, but this passage pertains to the fire. Ralph is angry that those in charge of watching the fire, repeatedly let it burn out. The fire is their only hope of getting off of the island because a passing ship might see their smoke.

Symbolism

The wind echoed across the dozens of oak trees in Mya's backyard. She was laying face up in her bed. It was impossible to fall asleep, thinking about tomorrow. Mya woke with a start to the loud buzz of her alarm clock.   "Morning already?" she said out loud.    Her mother walked in just before she went back to sleep. Mrs. Williams had a knack for picking the best times to show up. Once when Mya was eight, her mom drove up to her soccer game just in time to watch Mya score the winning goal in the last ten seconds. Mya smiled thinking about this happy memory. She quickly got dressed, and rushed downstairs. Today was going to be the best day ever, the day her aunt visited from Minnesota. Mrs. Williams would never tell her daughter, but she was dreading this yearly visit. Her twin sister Wendy gave her bad vibes, ever since she had moved to that awful town in Minnesota.     Mya's day flew by, but for some reason last period was taking forever. With eight minutes lef

Vocabulary Free Post- Getting a Dog

Ever since I was little, I had always dreamt of having a pet, but my mom was never a big fan of animals. She hated the idea of shedding, barking or pee in her house. Finally my dad convinced her of getting a poodle. I was utterly  shocked that she agreed. We picked a toy poodle in Houma that was small and had quiet parents. In fact, Lucy was the runt of her litter. The day that we were supposed to pick up Lucy, I remember my parents giving me a speech about how I had to take care of her. At the time, I wasn't aware of how big of an undertaking  taking care of a dog was actually going to be.    When we arrived at the breeders house, there were so many puppies in her living room, that I was little overwhelmed. They were all crying or sleeping. When the breeder handed me Lucy I instantly loved her. She was so small and cute. I couldn't wait to take her home. The breeder had my dad sign some papers while I played with our new puppy. She slept for the whole two hour drive home.

Reading Response- LOTF

When I first heard that we were reading, Lord of the Flies , I didn't think much of it. I knew that it was a classic, so I was prepared not to love the book because, in my opinion, some classics can be boring. I'm not going to lie,  Lord of the Flies  has a slow start, however it is getting good. I was most surprised by how many symbols there are in this book. Everything has a purpose, and it shocked me to think how much work it must have been for the author. It is also very interesting that so much can happen plot wise without a significant change in setting. Golding does a great job of creating imagery for the reader.    One of my points of focus is Jack and Ralph's relationship. When they first met, the boys became immediate friends. Both have strong leadership qualities, which show in their prominent roles on the island. Later in the book, tension rises in their friendship. This was bound to happen due to their overbearing attitudes. I was surprised at how quickly t
