Dear 13 Year Old

Dear 13 year old,

Congratulations on making it to eighth grade! Doesn't it feel great to finally be at the top of the food chain? You've worked your way up to the top, so now it's time to enjoy it, right? You should enjoy your eighth grade year, but you also need to remember a few things. Be nice to the younger kids. I'm sure you remember what it was like to be little and to be scared of the big kids. It is hard to be the new kid, especially when there are so many rules you don't know about yet. Put yourself in their shoes; you don't have to be friends with them, but a smile goes a very long way.  For girls, it's not a necessity that you have a boyfriend. Don't feel left out if you don't have one. Odds are that most of these relationships won't last. Remember not to ditch all of your friends for a boy. Boys will come and go, but your friends will always be there for you.
I know you are not thinking about college yet, and you shouldn't have to. However, high school is just around the corner, which means you will be thinking about the future soon. To prepare yourself for a good high school career, you should do your homework and study for tests frequently. Grades in middle school may not worry you, but getting into the habit of taking care of your school work is very important. Trust me, it will be a lot easier for you if you have already established some of the skills you need to succeed in high school.  My last piece of advice is to have fun. Enjoy your time being in the grade that all of the little kids look up to. It won't be long before you wind up at the bottom of the food chain, again...

Sincerely,
A 14 year old

  2. I agree that if you get in a habit of always doing your work and studying that you will not be as stressed in high school! I also agree with you that being the lowest grade in middle and high-school can be intimidating.
